The leather repair process

When people wonder about how to repair leather, our leather repair process motto is "less is better". The less we add to the repair the less noticeable it will be when the repair is finished. Each job is a little bit different and requires some creativity on the part of the technician. (Technician is a great word and is so PC, no gender required). But, there are a few basic steps in our process that we try not to vary from. This is just to give you a little insight into how we do "THAT".

Step ONE

Clean and prep area to be repaired. The basis of everything we do is making sure that the repair bonds to the original leather. A clean leather surface is critical.

Step TWO

Re-assemble the leather to pre-damaged condition. Sort of like putting a puzzle together. If there is a gap, a glued in sub-patch will close gap or hold pieces in place.

Step THREE

Use repair compound to fill voids. This corrects imperfections left after step two. It is important that to get the surface as close to smooth as possible.

Step FOUR

Mix and apply the correct color or colors to match the original. The color coat is really important. But, bringing each step to its highest level of repair is really the key.

And voila! You have an amazing leather repair!

And so it is with our leather repair process, simple yet rather complicated when you get into it.

one small note

Just for the record 99% of the repairs are not noticeable but are detectable. A repair is a less expensive alternative to replacement. So keep that in mind when determining whether to get something repaired or not. We have had customers get out the magnifying glass and tell me they could still see the repair and we say "you are absolutely right"!!

All of our repair products are environmentally friendly (there we go again, being PC). We do not use solvents except for methanol, which is a form of alcohol. Our finishes are all waterborne urethane and have little or no odor. Our repair compounds and fillers are air dry and are extremely flexible and strong.

Choose the type of repair that you are in need of or just peruse the list. There are limits to what we can do. Some customers have called us miracle workers, a title that we are happy to accept. We prefer to think of ourselves as just a skilled repair guy.
